Kansas Veterans' Cemetery Receives National Award

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs, Mr. Randy Reeves, visited the Kansas State Veterans' Cemetery at Fort Riley on September 18th, 2018. The Under Secretary presented the Lt. Governor and cemetery staff with the Certificate of Cemetery Operational Excellence Award.

The Fort Riley team scored a 98% on a federal inspection of cemetery operations led by the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration. The Cemetery met or exceeded 89 of 91 applicable performance measures in the areas of Interment Operations, Grounds Maintenance, and Headstone, Marker, Niche Cover Operations during an April 2018 compliance review.

The Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration awarded a $6.3 million grant in federal funding for the construction of the cemetery in 2008. The cemetery provides a final resting place of honor for Kansas Veterans and their eligible family members.
